Saturday is Legends Day in the Reynolds Center as the Golden Hurricane will honor Tulsa's legends of years past, with more than 15 former players expected to attend. Tulsa has won four straight Legends Day games, including both under head coach Eric Konkol. In his debut season, Tulsa knocked off Tulane 81-79 in overtime, and then last season the Hurricane went to overtime again to beat Rice 93-82.
Tulsa (9-14, 3-7 The American) and Florida Atlantic (12-10, 5-4 The American) have met just twice prior to tomorrow's contest, and this will be the first meeting in the Reynolds Center. The Hurricane went to Boca Raton the Owls 71-52 in 2014, and FAU returned the favor with a 102-70 victory last season in the Owls' first season in The American.
The losing streak extended to three on Wednesday after Tulsa fell 83-71 at No. 17/15 Memphis. A 14-4 run that started with a little less than 10 minutes to play turned a nine-point Memphis lead to a 19-point game from where TU could not recover.
Tyshawn Archie scored in double figures for the first time since early January and led Tulsa with 17 points. He also recorded a season-high four steals. Dwon Odom, Jared Garcia and Isaiah Barnes each scored 11. Odom dished out six assists in the loss.
Odom continues to lead Tulsa in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per contest to go along with 5.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists. He leads the conference and is 49th nationally in assists per game. He is also second in The American in field goal percentage among qualifying players, knocking down 54.7 percent of his efforts. The Hurricane is 9-5 this season when he's shot 50 percent or better from the floor.
Keaston Willis has knocked down 69 3-pointers this season to tie for the conference lead. He's made the most triples at Tulsa since Corey Henderson knocked down 73 in the 2017-18 season. Willis needs nine more makes to tie Marcus Hill (2000-01), Pat Birt (2015-16) and Tony Heard (1999-00) for 10th on the TU single season list.
Under the direction of first year head coach John Jakus, who joined Florida Atlantic after seven years with Baylor, FAU is attempting to work its way up the standings in The American. The Owls are riding a two-game winning streak into Saturday's contest, collecting dominating home wins against UTSA and South Florida. FAU is 2-2 in road games in conference play, with consecutive losses at Tulane and North Texas, and 3-5 overall.
The Owls are led in scoring by three players who average double figures and three more who score at least nine points per contest. Kaleb Glenn (12.4) leads the high scoring FAU offense, joining Tre Carroll (12.3) and Baba Miller (10.9) in double figures. Miller also pulls down a team-leading 7.1 rebounds per contest. KyKy Tandy (9.8), Matas Vokietaitis (9.4) and Leland Walker (9.2) are the three who are just under the 10+ point marker.
FAU can put up a lot of points, and everyone likes to get involved. The Owls are second in the conference and 35th nationally in points per game (81.1), and their 32.1 bench points per game leads The American and is 12th-best in the NCAA. The Owls also share the ball well on their way to baskets, dishing out 16.7 assists per game, the 29th-best rate in the NCAA and tops among league teams.
After tomorrow contest, the Golden Hurricane will head on the for a midweek matchup against the Temple Owls. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday and will air on ESPN+.
