Springville, Utah – The Tulsa women's golf team won its first season-opening tournament in nearly 30 years with a victory on Tuesday at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic. Trailing by two strokes at the start of the day, the Golden Hurricane made up those two strokes and claimed a two-stroke victory at the par-71 Hobble Creek Fall Classic.
The last time Tulsa won a season-opening tournament came in the fall of 1989 when the Hurricane won the Dick McGuire Invitational. The win also highlights the Tulsa coaching debut of Annie Young.
Tulsa carded a final round six-over par 290 total score and finished with a 54-hole total of 877, holding off host Utah Valley by two strokes.
Five Hurricane golfers finished among the top-18, as senior Olivia Jackson led the group with a third-place score of even-par 213, after carding a final round 1-under 70 Tuesday. Freshman Lorena Tseng had the best round of the day for a Tulsa golfer with a 3-under par total of 68 and finished the tournament with a 3-over par 216.
Tseng was the only player at the event to shoot even for par 4's, while Jackson was -7 for para 5 scoring.
Senior Johanna Samuelsson and freshman Shaelee Scarberry finished in an 18th place tie with three round totals of 224, while sophomore Taylor Dobson placed 39th overall with a score of 230.
Nikkie Marquardt, playing as an individual, had a complete turnaround from an opening round 82 as the senior turned in a second-round score of 72 and a career-best 2-under par 69 today to finish in 13th place with a score of 223 for the 54 holes. Marquardt scored two Eagles and was also -7 for par 5 scoring for the tournament.
Sam Houston State (890), Southern Utah (891) placed third and fourth, while Northern Arizona and Boise State (893) finished in a tie to round out the top-5 places.
Tulsa is scheduled to be back in action September 21-23, at the Furman Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, South Carolina.
