TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team is set to host Oral Roberts for the next iteration of the Mayor's Cup this Saturday in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and will air on ESPN+. Chad McKee and Pooh Williamson will bring fans the action. Bruce Howard and JR Rollo will broadcast the radio call on Big Country 99.5 FM and The Varsity Network app.
Saturday marks the 57th meeting between the two Tulsa schools, with the Golden Hurricane holding a 36-20 advantage in the series. TU has a 19-7 record at home and is 7-3 in the Reynolds Center against the Golden Eagles. ORU won last season's matchup 87-80, snapping a four-game win streak in the series for the Hurricane.
This year, Tulsa will look to get back in the win column both in the series and the season as the Hurricane (2-4) enter the Mayor's Cup on a three-game skid. Tulsa fell to Oklahoma State in Stillwater 82-56 last Friday after a poor shooting night.
Sam Griffin paces the Hurricane in scoring, averaging 16.2 per night. He's joined in double figure scoring by Brandon Betson (11.0), Tim Dalger (10.6) and Bryant Selebangue (10.5). Selebangue also leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 8.3 per contest.
ORU comes in with a 5-3 record under sixth-year head coach Paul Mills. The Golden Eagles are coming off a week with wins against Rogers State and Ozark Christian. The preseason Summit League Player of the Year, Max Abmas, has returned to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring, putting up 15.9 points per game while grabbing 6.7 rebounds. Connor Vanover's 7.6 rebounds per game leads the team. Vanover is also an elite shot blocker, averaging 4.0 blocks per game, which is second best in the nation.
The Golden Eagles can bury teams with 3-pointers, shooting 35.4 percent from deep. ORU averages 32.1 3-point attempts per game and connects on 11.4, which are second and seventh in the nation, respectively.
Saturday's matchup starts a four-game homestretch for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa will face Detroit Mercy on Wednesday, Dec. 7, before hosting Central Michigan and Mississippi Valley State to end the nonconference home slate. Tipoff time for Wednesday's game is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
