Tulsa Men in Second Place After Day One of American Indoor Championships
2/28/2025 9:33:00 PM | Track and Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Tulsa men's track team earned 42 points on day one Friday during the American Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, sitting in second place behind South Florida's 50.5 points. The Golden Hurricane men swept the podium and had six top 10 finishers during the 5,000m and took first place in the distance medley relay. In addition, they qualified two 800m runners for Saturday's final.
The Tulsa women's team ended the first day's action in 11th place with eight points. They qualified two 800m runners and one mile competitor to Saturday's finals, bringing the overall Tulsa qualifier total to five. Overall, Hurricane competitors earned six podium finishes, garnered 11 all-conference awards and saw four set new personal bests
Women
Both of Tulsa's entries in the 800m, junior pair Sarah Hosey and Billie Rouse, qualified for tomorrow's final with a second and fifth-place finish, respectively. Hosey crossed the line at 2:12.06 and Rouse finished almost five-tenths of a second later at 2:12.55.
Redshirt senior Ailey Mitchell produced the women's only top 10 finish in the 5,000m, finishing seventh in 16:54.17, earning two team points.
Wrapping up the action for the women was the distance medley relay team composed of sophomore Amy Morefield, junior Lianne Holtermann, sophomore Anastasia Small and freshman Matilda Laidlaw, who handled the final leg. As a group, they placed third in 11:44.41, each earning all-conference honors.
"We had a really young crew here today that is gaining incredibly valuable experience at this level. The hard part is that it usually results in some growing pains. We got quite a few through to finals and had a great finish on the DMR to get 3rd. We'll need every point tomorrow, but I liked what I saw today."
Men
Freshman Joseph Snyder and sophomore Andrew Lutkenhaus placed fifth and sixth, respectively in the men's 800m to qualify for Saturday's final round. Snyder cruised to a 1:52.05 finish, and Lutkenhaus earned a mark of 1:53.21.
A brilliant team performance in the 5,000m led to 32 total points for the Hurricane, fueled by the young talent of redshirt-freshman Ben Brown, redshirt freshman Luke Birdseye and redshirt sophomore Charlie Krasnoff, who swept the podium Friday for 24 combined points. Brown was crowned the champion in 14:22.83 after pulling ahead of Birdseye at the last second with Krasnoff heading up the rear for third.
Joining them in top 10 territory was redshirt junior Luke Lambert for fifth (14:30.97), sophomore James Knockton for sixth (14:31.16) and redshirt senior Chris McLeod for eighth (14:42.18).
The men's distance medley relay squad came out on top in 9:45.76 – TU's fifth-fastest DMR mark ever – after redshirt senior Shay McEvoy had an explosive mile run as the last leg of the race. He pulled ahead of everyone on the track and helped Tulsa finish four seconds ahead of the next team. He was set up by reshirt junior Sean Korsmo, followed by freshman Luke Finzen and then freshman Korban Murphy. All four athletes brought home the gold and all-conference honors.
"I'm incredibly happy with how day one went today. We didn't bring a massive squad, but the guys we brought crushed it today. We got two through to 800m finals, had a phenomenal 5K and topped it all off with a comeback on the anchor leg of the DMR – Shay McEvoy. If we can match that same energy & intensity tomorrow, we've got a chance to finish pretty high tomorrow!"
Tulsa will resume action at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, starting with the women's high jump.
